The flowers of the poinsettia are unassuming and do not attract pollinators.
The flowers actually emerge in the winter from the stem tips. Petals are actually coloured leaflike bracts that surround a central cluster of tiny yellow flowers.
The small yellow structures at the center of the bracts and is called cythia.
Flowers range from creamy white to pink to the traditional bright red. Some varieties have bracts with patterns in red and white, pink and white, or green and white and even bright orange.
Flower forms vary as well with some looking similar to a rose.
Poinsettias are used traditionally to treat skin conditions, warts, and toothaches.
